North Down MP Alex Easton has welcomed the news that Olympic Gold Medallist gymnast Rhys McClenaghan has been honoured with an MBE at Windsor Castle today.

Speaking following the investiture, Alex Easton MP said:

“I would like to warmly congratulate Rhys McClenaghan on being awarded an MBE in recognition of his outstanding achievements and services to gymnastics.

Rhys made history at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games by winning Ireland’s first ever Olympic gold medal in gymnastics in the pommel horse event. This was an incredible achievement and a proud moment not only for Newtownards, but for the whole of Northern Ireland.

His success on the world stage has helped raise the profile of gymnastics locally and has inspired young people right across North Down and beyond to become involved in sport.

To see a local athlete from Newtownards receive this honour at Windsor Castle today is a fitting recognition of his dedication, commitment and hard work. I wish Rhys every success as he returns to competition and looks ahead to the next Olympic Games in Los Angeles.”
