“I am deeply concerned by the serious threat of potential job losses at Spirit AeroSystems following the recent developments in the proposed deal with Airbus. This is a deeply worrying time for the skilled workforce and their families, and I am calling on the Prime Minister to take urgent action.
Many of my constituents in North Down work at Spirit AeroSystems, and they are understandably anxious about what the future holds. Over 2,000 jobs are directly at risk at Spirit, with a further 10,000 jobs potentially affected in the wider supply chain—many of which are in small businesses that simply cannot withstand such a significant economic shock.
These are highly skilled workers and vital local businesses that contribute enormously to Northern Ireland’s economy. Their future must be safeguarded.
Last Wednesday, I raised this matter directly with the Prime Minister during Prime Minister’s Questions, urging him to intervene by bringing all the key players to the table—this must include the trade unions, the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, and the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland. The response to this issue must match the seriousness and scale of previous interventions, such as that seen with British Steel.
In addition, I highlighted the continued problems Northern Ireland businesses face as a result of the Northern Ireland Protocol and the Windsor Framework. I have asked the Prime Minister to provide reassurances that he is actively working to resolve these outstanding issues, which are undermining the competitiveness and sustainability of local enterprise.
The workers, families, and businesses of Northern Ireland deserve certainty, protection, and a level playing field. I will continue to press the government until firm and decisive action is taken.”
