I have been contacted by a concerned constituent and local dog groomer who has highlighted a deeply troubling issue in our community — the ongoing neglect of dogs during extreme heat. I want to echo her concerns and issue a strong appeal to the public to take their responsibilities seriously when it comes to pet care.
It is absolutely unacceptable to see dogs being walked on scorching pavements, taken to the beach without adequate shade or water, or left outside or in cars during dangerously high temperatures. These actions are not only irresponsible but can cause severe suffering — and even death — to animals that rely entirely on their owners for care and protection.
As someone who believes passionately in animal welfare, I am calling for greater awareness, stronger enforcement, and a serious discussion on whether existing animal welfare legislation needs to be reviewed and strengthened to protect pets from this kind of harm. Leaving a dog in a hot car or exposing them to dangerous conditions should be treated with the gravity it deserves.
I commend the efforts of local professionals who are using their platforms to raise awareness about the risks pets face in extreme heat. Their dedication to sharing important information and promoting responsible ownership is making a real difference.
If you see an animal in distress, I urge you to report it immediately to the relevant authorities. Let’s be a community that protects and respects all life — especially those who cannot speak for themselves.
