I am deeply disappointed by the decision from the Ministry of Defence to deny Lieutenant Colonel Robert Blair ‘Paddy’ Mayne the Victoria Cross he richly deserves. Paddy Mayne was not only one of Northern Ireland’s greatest war heroes but an iconic figure whose extraordinary bravery and leadership helped secure crucial victories during the Second World War.

Born in Newtownards, Paddy Mayne’s legacy is one of incredible courage, selflessness, and dedication. As a founding member of the elite SAS, his outstanding bravery is beyond dispute. His actions in North Africa and Europe saved countless lives and significantly impacted the outcome of the war. It is a glaring injustice that his nomination for the Victoria Cross was downgraded, a decision that has remained controversial for decades.

I fully support the ongoing campaign led by Jim Shannon MP and the many veterans, historians, and family members tirelessly advocating for justice for Paddy Mayne. The Ministry of Defence’s argument, stating that it cannot revisit historical decisions, is unconvincing. Other nations, including our closest allies, have demonstrated that it is never too late to right historical wrongs and honour true heroism.

I call upon the Government and the Ministry of Defence to reconsider their stance, recognise Paddy Mayne’s immense contribution, and finally award him the Victoria Cross he so clearly deserves. The campaign to honour Paddy Mayne will not end here. We owe it to his memory and legacy to continue fighting for the highest recognition of his bravery.
