Alex Easton MP for North Down has issued the following statement in response to the UK Government’s controversial Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Bill, currently progressing through the House of Commons:

“I want to make my position absolutely clear: I have voted against the damaging welfare cuts proposed in this legislation, and I will continue to oppose the Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment Bill as it moves forward.

Despite the Government’s decision to withdraw the deeply flawed clause that would have made it harder for people to qualify for PIP based on a minimum 4-point threshold in a single activity, the wider Bill still represents a serious and unacceptable attack on those in genuine need.

This legislation seeks to cut the Universal Credit health top-up for new claimants from £97 to just £50 per week—a move that will disproportionately impact those with long-term illnesses, disabilities, and complex mental health needs. This is not welfare reform; it is a cost-cutting exercise at the expense of the most vulnerable in our society.

As someone who has always believed in protecting those who cannot protect themselves, I cannot and will not support measures that erode the dignity and security of people who rely on this support just to get by. These are not abstract numbers—these are real people, including constituents in North Down, who face rising living costs, unstable housing, and growing pressure on their health and wellbeing.

I have also listened closely to the concerns raised by disability rights organisations, mental health charities, carers, and constituents themselves. They are united in their fear that this legislation will increase hardship and widen the gap in support at a time when we should be doing more, not less.

It is disappointing that the Government continues to push forward with welfare changes without meaningful consultation or proper assessment of the long-term consequences. We need a welfare system that is compassionate, fair, and built on the principle of helping—not punishing—those in need.

For these reasons, I have already voted against the proposals in this Bill and I will vote against it again at every opportunity. I urge colleagues across the House, regardless of party, to stand up for decency and fairness by rejecting legislation that does not reflect the values we should hold as a society.

As the Member of Parliament for North Down, I will always stand with the people who need a voice. I will continue to speak out against injustice, defend the rights of those with disabilities and long-term conditions, and oppose any further attempt to dismantle the social net.
