Press Statement – Alex Easton MP
Alex Easton MP has expressed deep concern following Santander’s announcement that its Bangor branch will close as part of a wider programme shutting 44 branches across the UK.
The closure means yet another high-street bank is disappearing from North Down, dealing a further blow to local residents, small businesses and elderly customers who still rely on face-to-face banking services.
Commenting, Alex Easton MP said:
“This is deeply disappointing news for Bangor and the wider North Down area. We are witnessing the steady erosion of our local banking network, and it is ordinary customers who are paying the price.
“While Santander points to a shift towards digital banking, the reality is that many people – particularly older residents and vulnerable customers – depend on in-person services. For them, online banking is not a realistic alternative.
“This decision also raises serious concerns about the impact on local jobs, with nearly 300 colleagues across the UK placed at risk of redundancy. That human cost cannot simply be brushed aside.”
Santander has said that Community Bankers and Banking Hubs will replace closed branches, but Alex Easton MP warned this is no substitute for a permanent local presence.
“Community Bankers are not the same as a full-service branch. Bangor is a city and deserves proper banking facilities. Our town centre businesses also rely on accessible banking, and repeated closures only undermine efforts to regenerate our high streets.
“I will be seeking urgent clarification from Santander on what concrete support will be provided locally and how customers in Bangor will be properly served going forward. I will also be raising this matter with the relevant regulators to ensure North Down is not left behind yet again.”
Alex Easton MP added that he will continue to stand up for local banking provision and press for meaningful alternatives that genuinely meet the needs of residents and businesses in North Down.
