Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland – Ulster Banner reinstated
After writing to Commonwealth Games Northern Ireland yesterday, I was glad to see last night that common sense prevailed and the Ulster Banner has been reinstated.
I welcome this decision. It restores a position that should never have been unnecessarily disturbed in the first place. Many people across Northern Ireland feel proud to compete under the Ulster Banner, and that pride deserves respect.
At the same time, if any athlete does not wish to march under the Ulster Banner, they do not have to. No one should be forced into doing something they are uncomfortable with. But an organisation representing Northern Ireland must always think about everyone, and it must not dismiss those who value this flag and what it represents.
The priority now must be to move on from this avoidable row, rebuild confidence, and keep the focus where it belongs: supporting our athletes, promoting excellence in sport, and representing Northern Ireland with dignity and professionalism.
I wish Team NI every success in the Games ahead.
