I condemn the violence and disorder that we have seen in recent days. Violence is never the answer and I would urge everyone to remain peaceful and express their views through lawful and democratic means.
However, I do understand the anger, fear and concern that many people are feeling following the horrific attack on a member of the public on the streets of Belfast. The scenes witnessed have shocked communities across Northern Ireland and people are understandably looking for answers.
I want to pay tribute to those who have chosen to make their voices heard through peaceful protest, such as those who gathered in Bangor. Peaceful and lawful demonstrations are an important part of any democratic society and allow people to express their concerns without resorting to violence or disorder.
The Government must listen to the legitimate concerns being raised by local people regarding public safety, illegal immigration and border security. Simply dismissing these concerns as unfounded or refusing to engage with them is not the answer.
I believe there must be stronger measures to tackle illegal immigration and greater attention given to the movement of people into Northern Ireland via the border with the Republic of Ireland. The public are entitled to expect that immigration laws are enforced and that our borders are properly managed.
While there can be no justification for violence, there must also be no attempt to silence or ignore the genuine concerns being expressed by many law-abiding citizens. The answer is peaceful protest, democratic debate and effective action from Government to address the issues that people are raising.
