North Down MP Alex Easton has welcomed a commitment from the Government Minister responsible for policing to engage with the Treasury and other relevant bodies regarding funding for a new Police Service of Northern Ireland training college.
Speaking following a Westminster Hall debate which he secured on the future of police training facilities in Northern Ireland, Mr Easton said the minister’s commitment was an important step forward in addressing the long-standing need for a modern, fit-for-purpose training facility for the PSNI.
Alex Easton MP said:
“Our police officers deserve the very best training facilities available. The current arrangements are simply not sustainable in the long term and Northern Ireland requires a modern training college capable of meeting the demands of modern policing.
“During today’s debate, I highlighted the importance of investing in the future of policing in Northern Ireland. I therefore welcome the minister’s commitment to meet with the Treasury and the relevant bodies to explore funding options for this vital project.
“While this does not yet represent a funding commitment, it is a significant step in the right direction. It demonstrates that the Government recognises the importance of this issue and is willing to engage seriously with finding a solution.
“Our police officers put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect our communities. They deserve training facilities that reflect the professionalism and dedication they bring to the job.
“I will continue to work with the Government, the PSNI and all relevant stakeholders to ensure this project remains a priority and that progress is made towards securing the funding necessary to deliver a new training college.”
Mr Easton added that investment in police training infrastructure is an investment in public safety and confidence in policing across Northern Ireland.
