I am delighted to have tabled an Early Day Motion in the House of Commons recognising the outstanding sportsmanship and selflessness shown by Bangor man Aaron Beggs during the Boston Marathon.
Aaron’s actions captured the attention of people around the world when, despite being just metres from the finish line and on course for an exceptional time of 2 hours 44 minutes and 45 seconds, he stopped to assist a fellow runner who had collapsed in distress.
In a sporting world that often focuses solely on results and personal achievement, Aaron demonstrated that compassion, humanity and concern for others are far more important than any finishing position. His actions were a credit to himself, his family, his Lodge and the wider Bangor and North Down community.
As a member of Sons of Ulster LOL 1027, Aaron also exemplified the values of brotherly love, charity and integrity which have long been associated with the Orange Institution. His decision to stop and help another competitor in need reflected those principles in a practical and meaningful way on the international stage.
The Early Day Motion recognises not only Aaron’s remarkable act of kindness, but also the positive example he has set for others. He represented his Lodge, his running club, Bangor, North Down and Northern Ireland with distinction and showed the very best of our people.
Members of Sons of Ulster LOL 1027, together with the wider Orange family, will be immensely proud of the manner in which Aaron conducted himself. His actions demonstrated that success is not measured solely by personal achievement, but also by how we treat and care for others.
At a time when positive role models are needed more than ever, Aaron’s actions remind us that simple acts of kindness, compassion and selflessness can inspire people across the world.
By tabling this Early Day Motion, I want to ensure that Aaron’s outstanding act of kindness and sportsmanship is formally recognised by Parliament. He has made his Lodge proud, he has made Bangor and North Down proud, and he has made Northern Ireland proud. He is thoroughly deserving of this recognition and I congratulate him on this remarkable achievement.
