Alex Easton MP welcomes new DWP plans to record all PIP assessments as standard to improve fairness and transparency

North Down MP Alex Easton has welcomed confirmation from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) that Personal Independence Payment (PIP) assessments will, under new plans, be recorded as standard to improve transparency and confidence in the system.

The Minister for Social Security and Disability, Sir Stephen Timms, confirmed in a written response to Mr Easton that the DWP intends to move from the current “opt-in” system for recording assessments to one where all PIP assessments are recorded automatically, with claimants able to opt out if they wish.

Commenting on the development, Alex Easton MP said:

“This is a very positive step forward for claimants. Many people who go through the PIP assessment process find it stressful, and there have been far too many cases where individuals feel they have not been treated fairly or that what was said in the assessment was not accurately reflected in the outcome. Recording assessments as standard will bring greater transparency, help build trust in the process, and ensure that both claimants and assessors are protected.”

Mr Easton continued:

“I welcome the Minister’s assurance that audio recording is already available for both face-to-face and telephone assessments, but the move to make this standard practice will go a long way in reassuring the public that the system is fair and accountable.”

Under the DWP’s proposed Pathways to Work Green Paper, all health assessments—including those for PIP—would be automatically recorded unless a claimant chooses to opt out. The Department has stated that this change aims to “improve people’s trust in the health assessment process” and ensure a consistent experience across all assessment types, including those carried out in person, by video, or over the phone.

Mr Easton concluded:

“It is essential that those with disabilities or long-term health conditions feel supported and respected when going through the assessment process. Transparency and accountability are key, and I will continue to press the Government to ensure that this new policy is implemented swiftly and effectively”.
