Alex Easton MP Welcomes Freedom of Ards and North Down for Olympic Champion Rhys McClenaghan

 

Alex Easton MP has warmly welcomed the decision to confer the Freedom of Ards and North Down on Newtownards gymnast Rhys McClenaghan MBE, describing it as a richly deserved honour for an outstanding local sportsman.

 

Mr Easton said:

 

“I want to congratulate Rhys McClenaghan on receiving the Freedom of Ards and North Down. This is a tremendous achievement and a proud moment for Newtownards and for our entire borough.

 

“Rhys has made history by winning Ireland’s first Olympic gymnastics gold medal and, in doing so, has placed Ards and North Down firmly on the world sporting map. His journey from local sports halls to Olympic champion is truly inspiring.

 

“This recognition from his home community is especially meaningful. Rhys is not only an exceptional athlete but also a fantastic role model for young people across Northern Ireland, showing what can be achieved through hard work, dedication and belief.

 

“I join with residents across North Down in wishing Rhys every success in the future. We are incredibly proud of him and look forward to seeing what more he will achieve.”
