PRESS STATEMENT – ALEX EASTON MP

I am issuing a clear and unequivocal message: the scenes of anti-social behavior in Bangor will not be tolerated.

Over recent weeks, there has been a growing problem of groups of youths travelling into Bangor—often by train—some but not all have unfortunately come to engage in fighting, intimidation, and disruptive behavior in our city centre and local shops. This is completely unacceptable.

Let me be absolutely clear: Bangor is a city, and it must be treated with respect. Residents, families, and visitors have the right to feel safe when they go about their daily lives. They should not have to contend with large groups causing fear, disorder, and disruption.

This behavior is not representative of the vast majority of young people, who are respectful and law-abiding. However, a minority are giving others a bad name—and that minority must face the consequences.

I am calling for stronger coordination between transport services and the police. Where there is clear evidence of large groups engaging in anti-social behavior on trains, that intelligence should be passed immediately to the PSNI so that officers can be present at Bangor station to meet those involved and ensure there is no alcohol, substances or illegal weapons..

Where individuals are found to be carrying alcohol, drugs, or are involved in disorder, robust action must be taken. This includes arrests where appropriate, and ensuring those responsible are removed from our streets and returned home if necessary.

There must also be a visible and proactive presence from the Council’s Anti-Social Behavior Team, particularly during periods of good weather when these incidents tend to increase. They should be out on the ground enforcing drinking by-laws and tackling anti-social behavior alongside the police. A joined-up approach is essential to restoring confidence with local residents in our city.

I also want to send a clear message to parents and guardians: it is your responsibility to know where your children are, who they are with, and what they are doing. There must be a far greater level of awareness and control. Allowing young people to travel unsupervised and become involved in underage drinking, drug use, or disorder is not acceptable. Before the police come knocking on the door, or worse, before someone is seriously injured.

Bangor and North Down will not become a dumping ground for disorder. Our community deserves better.

I will continue to work closely with the PSNI and relevant authorities to ensure that firm action is taken. The message is simple: if you come to Bangor to cause trouble, you will be dealt with.

This behavior must stop—and it must stop now, its time to consider reopened Bangor Police Station to the public.
