I want to extend my warmest congratulations to Rory McIlroy on what has been an extraordinary year for him, for Holywood Golf Club, for North Down, and for Northern Ireland.
Rory’s crowning as BBC Sports Personality of the Year is richly deserved and reflects a remarkable season in which he has once again shown the world the very best of sporting excellence and professionalism.
To complete the career Grand Slam by winning The Masters at Augusta — and to do so in such dramatic fashion — is an achievement that places Rory among the true legends of the game. It is a moment that will inspire young golfers across our constituency and right across Northern Ireland for generations to come.
Rory also played a pivotal role in Europe’s Ryder Cup victory in the United States, delivering key performances and showing the leadership and resilience that define the very top level of sport.
And to cap it all, he has continued his success across the season, once again demonstrating consistency, dedication, and an unrelenting drive to improve — qualities that have made him one of the most respected figures in world golf.
Rory has said he has “a lot more” he wants to achieve after an “incredible” 2025, and I have no doubt that he will continue to set new standards and deliver more unforgettable moments for golf fans everywhere.
In light of these achievements — and the immense pride he has brought to North Down and Northern Ireland on the world stage — I again formally recommend that Rory McIlroy be considered for a knighthood.
Once again, congratulations Rory — you have put Holywood, North Down, and Northern Ireland firmly on the worldwide golfing stage, and we are immensely proud of you.
