I welcome the latest progress update on the long-awaited new build for Priory Integrated College in Holywood.
This project was originally announced for Fresh Start Programme funding in March 2016 by the then Minister, John O’Dowd. As Fresh Start funding has now been exhausted, the scheme has moved into the Department of Education’s conventional major works programme.
The planned development is for a 600-pupil mainstream post-primary school with additional learning support classes. Importantly, it will allow Priory to move from its current landlocked site on My Lady’s Mile to the Education Authority-owned site of the former Redburn Primary School, providing a far more suitable setting for a modern, growing school community.
The Education Authority is leading delivery of the project, supported by Isherwood & Ellis Architects. Following completion of the design and the receipt of planning approval in July 2024, the Department of Education permitted the EA in June 2025 to commence the two-stage procurement process for a contractor. Stage 1 procurement is now underway, with an expectation that Stage 2 will commence in Q2 of 2026. Subject to the Department approving capital finance, the current target is for works to commence on site in Q3 2026.
While these are positive steps, parents, pupils and staff have waited far too long for certainty. I will continue to press the Department of Education and the Education Authority to maintain momentum, secure the necessary capital funding, and provide clear, regular updates to the school community and local residents as the process advances.
Priory Integrated College deserves a first-class facility that meets today’s educational needs and supports every young person to achieve their potential. I will keep working to ensure this project is delivered without further delay.
