PRESS STATEMENT
Alex Easton MP – Member of Parliament for North Down
I was delighted to visit Sullivan Upper School this morning and meet with the Principal, Craig Mairs.
During our discussion we spoke about the traffic congestion outside the school each morning along Abbey Ring. Due to the narrowness of the road and the high number of vehicles dropping pupils off, Translink buses are currently having to mount and drive over the grass verge in order to pass safely.
This is clearly not an ideal or sustainable situation and highlights the need for a practical solution.
One proposal that has been suggested is the creation of a dedicated bus lay-by along this section of Abbey Ring. This would allow buses to pull in safely to pick up and drop off pupils without obstructing traffic, while also preventing further damage to the grass verge.
Pupil safety must always come first, and it is important that we work with all relevant authorities to find a sensible and practical solution that works for the school, local residents and road users.
I want to thank Craig Mairs for taking the time to meet with me, and I also want to thank the staff at Sullivan Upper for the important work they do supporting young people in our community.
