North Down MP Alex Easton has said hospitality businesses across Holywood and North Down are facing mounting financial pressure following visits and discussions with local business owners.
Speaking after meeting representatives from the hospitality sector, Alex Easton MP said many businesses are deeply concerned about rising operating costs, increasing energy bills, higher wage costs, National Insurance increases, and weakening consumer confidence.
Alex Easton MP said:
“Hospitality businesses are absolutely vital to Holywood and the wider North Down economy. They provide jobs, support local suppliers, attract visitors, and help keep our town centres vibrant and busy.
During my visits, business owners made it clear that many are now operating under enormous financial strain. Rising energy costs linked to the growing instability in the Middle East are now adding further pressure on top of already increasing costs from taxation, wages, business rates, and inflation.
Many hospitality businesses are family-run operations with very tight margins. There is real concern that if costs continue to rise without Government intervention, some otherwise successful businesses could struggle to survive.
I have written to the Chancellor urging the Government to engage directly with the hospitality sector and to consider targeted support measures, including energy support, business rates relief, and wider measures to help reduce the burden on businesses.
I have also asked the Treasury to seriously consider temporary VAT relief for the hospitality sector to help businesses manage rising costs, protect jobs, and support local high streets during this increasingly difficult economic period.
Hospitality businesses are at the heart of our local communities and economy, and they must not be overlooked.”
Alex Easton MP added that he will continue engaging with local hospitality businesses across Holywood and North Down and raising their concerns directly with Government ministers.
